Chris Benham


Chris currently holds a key role in Inspyer Ltd where the skills developed over the years are shared with our customers.

Chris has been in the Engineering and Maintenance field for over 40 years starting out serving his time in the Marine Engineering industry and gaining a Marine Steam Engineers Ticket with P & O Lines. He then took up a position in Suva Fiji as Superintendent at Bish Ltd Ship Building and Repair Yard. Chris and family then moved to New Zealand where he made a career change and took up the challenge of the Pulp and Paper Industry. Chris was initially employed in the Caxton Tissue Mill as a Shift Trouble Shooting Engineer, before moving briefly into production as a Shift Foreman.

Twenty three years ago Chris transferred into the maintenance department to focus on Plant Reliability. This new role covered Shut planning, Lubrication site setup and management, Vibration Analysis, Shock Pulse, Thermography and Acoustic Noise Emission. In this role Chris was a pioneer in the predictive maintenance field often developing or applying new technology. Over the years in this role he has been involved in setting up a manual Vibration analysis system then developing this to a computerized system as technology has advanced. Chris managed Maintenance planning systems and as technology has advanced he held a key role in design and implementation of the SAP Maintenance CMMS system for CHH Tissue. He was also involved in the rolling out SAP Maintenance to all the CHH Tissue sites in New Zealand and some of the Australian sites. In his role as Site Steam Plant Engineer Chris was deeply involved in the implementation of unmanned steam plant operation and is still involved in all boilers shut and survey work.

Other roles held have been Health and Safety Engineer, where he set up site safety induction and created the site Isolation safety procedures, Trainer for Precision Maintenance techniques from lubrication through alignment and fitting practices. Outside passions include gardening and Youth ministry; puppets are another of his passions. Chris and a group of friends created a charitable trust called Puppet Vision where puppets are used to entertain and train Primary School children in life skills including topics like road safety and epilepsy awareness. Chris was secretary of VANZ (Vibration Association of New Zealand) for 10 years, a world respected group promoting Reliability Technology.
